surfacing stories

I have to admit. I am abashedly comfortable with a large amount of ambiguity.

Especially in my own artwork.

The unsaid can be so much more powerful than the explicit.

I think that is why I am so drawn to the minimalist aesthetic. Sometimes I fear it verges on narcissism, how fascinated I become with a rearranging a few simple objects, that are highly charged with meaning.

I used block print stamps of a house, a fish a circle and a jug. Thoughts of comfort, shelter, containment, spirituality, fragility, and abundance come to mind as I create little sweet vignettes with these ubiquitous shapes.

Then, with a pencil I traced simple lines and shapes, each of which infuse the relationships between the objects with a whole new archive of narratives. The stories start to arise from the pages and I hear voices, see scenes, taste moods of lives that may have lived in the imagination of these little pictures.

I wrote out a few lines from the unwritten novels that each picture connotes and then, by typing them on an old typewriter, arranging, cutting and pasting them, they are summoned into the visual world where their shape, form and size have value.  They play as elements in the collage, able to bounce the characters and histories back and forth in the spaces between shapes.

Any adult or kid could finish the stories, arrange the images and create narratives that resonate in new ways.

I'm sorry. Its all so ambiguous, but I can't help loving this series of unrelated-yet harmonious images.

Like lost pages from the same book, rearranged on my table, and I'm left to imagine the stories that are long gone.

Fruit

Just finished this funny little painting who has this quirky voice that is really just telling me what it wants to be. In that way, I'd say this percocious little piece just painted itself. Glad I was here for the journey!

A bit more painting.

The rain makes me feel like painting. Still in progress, these are a part of a series I'm working on.

We did some block printing

I knew there was I reason I kept my "zoller" and Lino cut knives all these years. I've been itching to do some printing for my latest book project. The boys were equally inspired.

A little paint with breakfast?

I'm finding little gaps in my day to paint again. I keep my watercolours in a box by the kitchen table. So far in the last 24 hours I've found two unexpected moments to paint.

The first was the 15mins before bed, after bath, pj's and snack. The baby was not quite ready to lie down so we both did a little painting. I keep her watercolours with mine and so she paints with me. I also keep a stack of her paintings and she just continues to work on them, to avoid the "incredible paper hunt" every time she wants to paint.

The second moment was during breakfast, while drinking my tea and eating my lentil soup. Somehow I got a little art in then too. This is very satisfying and magical and I'm so grateful for the ease of this.

To hit the point home you can read this article on the importance and benefits of doing a little art everyday.

(I love reading articles about stuff I'm already doing. It's such an easy way to brag. ;))

Painting with kids

Bringing out the paints with the kids is so healing. No pressure just stream of consciousness work.  I even sometimes sneak the kid's paintings that they don't want anymore and work on them a bit. It's so fun.

I'm enjoying watercolour painting with felt marker over top.

Dragons

We did some dragon painting today too. We saw "How to Train your Dragon" on the weekend. The first painting Emery and I collaborated on. Also I used it to demonstrate some painting techniques like wet on wet, adding detail, and colour mixing. Then Emery declared he could make a dragon much scarier than mine, and he proceeded to paint his own version. I think he was right.

(As a mom and painter this is super exciting. Emery (age 5) rarely draws or paints anything representational. I love his shapes and abstract work, but it's always astounding to see how he can represent the images he sees in his head. He has such a three dimensional sensitivity. It's wonderful to watch him develop!)

Rainy day.

Starting 14 paintings today. It's like an art explosion. This is what happens when I bottle it up way too long. :)

Rainy morning at Wolf Willow with my girl

Got a little chance to draw at Wolf Willow studio this rainy morning. Such an inspiring and beautiful space. What a cozy, cozy morning! Thank you Michelena!!!

I just got one boot done, but it was enough for today.

Rain boots on babies are ridiculously adorable.
